A different look. I tried Virtual Desktop today. This simply places what you see on your desktop in front of you on a large screen in the HMD. So I tried streaming portions of movies and they looked very good but they were old movies (not shot in HD). So then I tried a live stream of a soccer match. Wow, it was amazing. It was like watching it on my TV only huge. Detail was crisp with wonderful colors and contrast. I can now see how well the 8K can render things. I wish I could get that clarity of detail in IL-2.

I hear you. There are tweaks that would help the current situation a lot. It's estimated that IL-2 could render 30% faster if the devs eliminated the need for parallel processing. There is also something being explored where using PrecisionX1 you can squeeze an additional 35+%. Just a wait and see game.

After learning more about how the various software works together, I went back to the drawing board for my settings and I think I now have the rendering up to a 8 out of 10. It is much clearer now. Instruments are easier to read, ground targets detected better, performance in a decent range. I can see aircraft at about 90% of the distance on a monitor but they are still not as sharp. I think it's ready for another go in mp.
As I mentioned in a previous post there is an in-game zoom for VR of about 25% of non-VR. There is however a mod that works in mp which adds three more levels of zoom. This helps a lot in ID'ing aircraft at distance. Part of the mod also helps in checking 6.
One thing I had not tried until yesterday was sitting in the cockpit of an He-111. Very friggin cool.
One other thing happened today. After landing a P-47 and getting off the runway I braked hard and I it actually felt like my body was pressed forward. Just had to laugh.

Flew VR in mp for the first time in a while. I have been caught with my pants down a couple times previously and needed better rendering which I have now. Was in Combat Box with Snake at the time, both in Spit IXs. Snake spotted a 190 low which bombed an airfield and came back up. I was able to get and stay on his six, though he tried hard to shake me. His wing finally came off and he became my first mp kill in VR. I think being in VR actually helped in the chase.

Here is a review of DCS through the new HP Reverb VR headset.
And a second more generic look:

With VR there is a lot of talk about FOV and how important it is. So I figured the best way to demonstrate it is with pictures. The first screenie is the widest possible FOV on a 16:9 monitor. The size and resolution of the monitor doesn't matter, if it's aspect ratio is 16:9, this is what you'll see. I placed my Pimax 8K in Small FOV, which is 120 degrees horizontal. Most VR headsets are ~110 degrees with the Reverb at ~114 and the Index at ~130 which is not that different. The screenie below is normal sitting position with 120 degree FOV. EDIT: I revised this. The area inside the red lines is representative of what I see inside the HMD. The screenie was taken from the monitor and it doesn't match. As you can see, even with the smallest FOV in VR, the width and a little more height of what can be viewed is larger than a 16:9 monitor. The idea of "tunnel vision" with VR is sort of a misnomer. I may keep it on Small FOV as I can squeeze in more super sampling and still keep good fps.
EDIT: Here's the other thing to consider. A monitor sits 2 to 3 feet away from you. In VR everything is closer as it surrounds you.

**bump** corrected the VR visual area.

I have always had the ability to go cross eyed and then refocus so I can do this with this picture and get a real impression of what the 3-D looks like. Really good isn’t it. When we are looking at our monitors we are getting tunnel vision without the actual tunnel. If we wrapped a black cloth around the monitor back to our heads we would soon realise the tunnel vision we are using....

I was finally able to get in a few sorties last night using VR. I was getting frustrated by CTDs of late but I think this has been resolved. I use a mod (3Dmigoto) that can change color saturation along with other things. That, with changes I made with super sampling and other settings, gives me good visuals and performance. I was able to spot aircraft at distance pretty good though not like on a monitor. All in all, unless something rears its ugly head, I think I'll be trying to use VR on an ongoing basis in all mp, except TAW, as the immersion is well worth it.

...All in all, unless something rears its ugly head...
Well, ugly raised it's head. Was still having an problem with the HMD going black which results from losing tracking and a software issue. I have procrastinated on moving my lighthouse but I finally did, higher and further away. Since then I haven't had one loss of tracking (fingers crossed). The software issue has also gone away so I think the two were linked somehow. So I am back in business on mp. You are all invited to come watch me in mp as I perform taking a perfectly good aircraft and turning it into a flaming wreck. I know, what's so special about that, I do this already in non-VR.
