I realise that I am creating a second thread related to the emergency procedures for the F-18. However, as I am not sure how many of you have been following the Emergemcy ofthe Dsy thread and tried to keep up with the plethora of failures an associated actions that can occur, I wanted to create another thread that explains the overall structure a little more.... We have basically got through about half of that section of the manual!!!!!
I also wanted to point out a few things that I have found whilst reading the Manual.
Firstly, all manuals are complicated, but this one “takes the biscuit” as it appears to be written by a Flight Test Pilot who loaves the sound of his own voice. It’s wordy, longwinded, over complicated, and the explainations are often in an order that is reversed from logic....
It’s really hard to put it all together. I am amazed that this document hasn’t had a huge revision to make it more coherent for the ordinary pilot....
The Emergencies are divided up into a number of sections and for all the work in the other thread we still have a long way to go.
FCS failures
Hyd failures
Profiles to perform for emergencies during various phases of flight etc
So, ..........
I’m going to create an Emergency Profiles thread to cover the “What to do” scenarios.
I’m also going to try to simplify the HUGE Hyd Emergencies which covers pages and pages of teh emergencies check list and cannot be that complicated. There really must be some generalities and rules of thumb that can be introduced with just the detail to be added for the specific syste(s) failure.
I will also try to break out the FCS failures into something more task flow/tree like to get to the solution more quickly.. This may contain images (probably generated using tables) that compare to what you would be seeing on the FCS page of the DDI. That way the right check for a particular failure can be achieved without huge interpretation.
All in all this is one of the worst manuals I have ever had to read and I dont want that to put you guys off from learning about the aircraft.
I will add manuals text an d then précis it..... You will know as I will mark the manuals text as DO NOT READ! Which means you can if you wish but you dont need to...
One of the major snags is the Emergencies text is an image and so I have to type it all out all the time!!! Tiresome...
Thanks for bearing with me....
