Last week’s session saw the US forces gain slight advantage. The Imperial Carrier Strike Force sustained grievous losses on the heels of those at the Coral Sea. Following the disaster at Midway, Admiral Nagumo has committed suicide. Admiral Yammamoto himself has assumed command of the remains of the Carrier Strike Force and returned to the home islands. The Combined Fleet is not done yet.
The United States Navy now has blunted the momentum of the heretofore unstoppable Imperial Japanese Navy. In order to build their own tide of war, Admiral Chester Nimitz has ordered the invasion of a little known island deep in the South Pacific. Located in the Solomon Island chain, Guadalcanal is the site of an as yet to be completed Japanese air field. US Marines have landed and in what has been some of the most bitter (and at times hand to hand) combat in American history seized the strip.
This stain on the Imperial honor cannot stand. Admiral Yammamoto having lost the initiative at Midway now responds by sending the newly repaired Zuikakku and Shokakku of Carrier Division Two to the region. Orders: stop the US Navy, no matter the cost. Backed up by land based aircraft, the odds seem to be in the Empire’s favor.
Task Force 17 steams off shore to cover the landing beaches, with the USS Enterprise and Hornet. Marines stream ashore in landing craft. Can the Imperial Navy tip the scales back?
