I thought I would add to the confusion of Reshade settings. Here are samples of how I see the game. How I view it however will be different from what you see in the screenshots due to differences in your monitor, whether it is calibrated, your Internet browser, etc. but the comparison shots should still give you a good idea of the difference. The comparisons are only Reshade on and off. When off, I did not tweak any settings to make the off setting look better, although I tried with gamma and it didn't help. My settings are listed below the example screenshots.

BTW, if you see something in my settings that could conflict, please point it out. Pretty much I have settled on these for now and are subject to change.
Notes: 1. Black and White levels. If case you are not familiar with how these work. Total black is 0, total white is 255. Take an example of something being rendered in the game with a black level of 8. The would be a very dark level of gray. If you set a black level in Reshade of 15, this means that that anything rendered by the game between 0 and 15, including the 8 mentioned, will be treated as as 0, total black. The same goes for white, if you set white to less than 255 any gray renderings higher than that number will be rendered as total white.
2. Deband. I get banding without Reshade. I would suggest trying Reshade without using this first as you may not need it. If you do have banding, you may want to start with the Low setting first and 1 Iteration and increase the levels until it looks good. It does have an affect on clouds as well.
3. Sometimes less is more. I would keep to a minimum number of shaders. Too many may cause conflicts.
EDIT: BTW, these settings were inspired by Snake who took the time to go through his settings with 26 and I one evening. Although the shaders used by me are different from his settings, he got me thinking "outside of the box" I was in for Resahde use. So if you find anything here useful, thank Snake as well.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I installed Reshade, and now can't tell a silver P-51 from a gray bf-109 at 150 yards at full zoom, nor a silver P-47 from a grey Fw-190. Even followed a camouflage Spit in a complete circle before realizing it wasn't a grey 109 (and it was the clip-wings that finally gave it away). The scenery looks nice, though. As much as I've paid into this game, especially over the life of IL-2, you'd think someone would come to the house and set up my computer so I could enjoy the damn thing!

Stick thanks. I tried to follow the original example but the reshaders that were discussed were not in the menu. I will try these ASAP. I got the VR shaders going pretty good, just have to figure out the zoom mapping.

I have seen some very horrible examples of Reshade on the forums by people using it for better spotting regardless of how it looks overall. Some of them look like artist renditions of another planet. That is not what I am trying to achieve. I find the game graphics have a very washed out and dull look to it though it is better than it used to be. The colors also tended toward a yellow haze too. I calibrate my monitor for editing photos so that was not the issue. With Reshade I try to get it close to reality while providing some additional spotting ability. I have used the following site to make adjustments to my monitor. If you don't know how close your monitor is you may want to give it a look. Calibration this way is more of an art than a science. Once you get one setting the way you want it, another setting may change that. It's a matter of compromise between settings. Link: www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/

Stick, I cannot find the adaptive re shade option is there an update? I assume you mean AdaptiveSharpen. It is in the Legacy Standard Effects. Included shader loading option screenshot from install in OP.

I know I don’t see contacts anywhere as well as Snake or 26. But I always have to have a snigger to myself whean people talk about getting near to reality.... I’m not poking fun at anyone, it’s just 90% of people playing the games seem to think they know how easy or hard it is to see an aircraft at height, or to see and make out an object on the ground. It’s not! It is really hard at times. The gin clear days that we love to see in our games are very few and far between. I have probably seen days like those about 20 times in my whole career. Normally, it is hazy (and haze is yellowish!) due to desert sand in the atmosphere as a result of high pressure over Europe. Union will back me up by remembering the sand on our cars in the summer. I’ve seen it where suddenly you can’t see the land passing about 3000ft due to an inversion holding down the haze in the lower atmosphere.
That is not to say we shouldn’t be using reshade to improve our GAME experience and I very much respect the effort Snake, 26 and Stick have gone to to give us the best information they can. It’s just not reality. Reality is pretty much like reshade off.
Sorry 😐 I’ll get off my box now!!!

Gos, respectfully I have to say that you completely misunderstood my comment regarding my use of Reshade trying to achieve "reality". My comment on reality was not about contact spotting at all, for that I would agree with you. The "reality" I referred to had to do with the game's colorization only, which IHO as a photo editor is inaccurate. As I mentioned above:
Even the best of cameras do not always do justice to color, due to many variables at the time the photo is taken, thus the need for editing. I have also been in aircraft at various altitudes, including numerous times in open cockpit under ~3,000ft, in different weather and lighting conditions and have a feel for the changes in color under these conditions. My "additional spotting ability" comment is secondary to my use of Reshade for reality, i.e., color adjustment, and unfortunately is done just to place us on a level playing field with others.

Stick you fucking genius!
My hardware is more similar to Stick's setup, therefore when i switched to his, I am able to see contacts a lot better now using Stick's vs Snake's. For example, instead of using 80% of my concentration on following my wingman and 20% on looking for bogies, its now 80% looking for bogies and 20% wingman due to the fact that I can see him immediately when I look back for him! I suggest to bounce back between Stick's setup and Snake's (if he ever posts it) to see what better suits you and matches your set up. Keep in mind you still might have to tweak left or right, but use either as a baseline. Thanks to both of them!
P.S. I am more than happy to post mine also on request or even walk you through it.
P.S. #2 GOS has a good point, for example, spotting for my snipers using my eye is very hard to see things out past one click against the terrain, so keep that in mind, but to play devil's advocate, jumping out of planes at angels 30 or flying up that high you sometimes can make out cars in driveways...go figure.

Stick's comments are good points. I understand how you are approaching this Stick and I agree it is sometimes washed out. I will try to get some pictures when I fly next as we have stable high pressure here and I am sure there is the haze about that |I am talking about. As for colourisation technical issues, I bow to your graphics experience.
Mr26's comment about seeing cars in driveways is a good one. 30,000ft is 5nm so not that far horizontally when it comes to combat...

The game is capable of producing various weather conditions. My screenshots were perfect conditions with distant horizon. These are things controlled both in the game graphic settings and by server admins. You can change the horizon draw distance and the landscape filter to reflect something more to what you may be talking about.
As far as Mr.26 and the cars, my question is, why is he not down there strafing them?

Gos, for what it is worth, I thought you might be interested in screenshot examples of lesser visual settings to show how the game might give you something like you are talking about. I did not look at contact spotting. These are identical shots, both with Reshade on, except for three settings. The game settings would affect the visuals with or without Reshade. Take into consideration they are also through the game's plexi. I only adjusted 3 settings however they each have multiple variables so there are many iterations not shown that one could play with.
One of the things to note are the cities and lakes off the tip of the wing that are quite visible in the first that are not so in the second.
As seen with the settings in the OP:Distant landscape detail: 4X Horizon draw distance: 150km Landscape filter: Sharp
As seen with the following settings adjusted:
Distant landscape detail: Normal Horizon draw distance: 70km Landscape filter: Blurred

The update made changes to the visuals. I am making some changes to my settings above and when satisfied will post them.
