I restored this today. Today in 1945. A North American P-51D Mustang of the Vll Fighter Command taking off from Saipan, Mariana Islands for the newly-captured airfield on Iwo Jima, Mar 16, 1945. Runway appears to be the Japanese Aslito Field built for the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service (IJNAS). The airfield was captured by the US Army 27th Infantry Division and renamed Isley Field. A part of Mount Tapochau can be seen on the left background.

This photo (restored) was posted in the WWII Database. Taken on March 26, 1942 it is of the Akagi shortly after leaving Port Stirling, Celebes for the Indian Ocean, 26 Mar 1942. What I thought was impressive was not just the flight deck and aircraft but the line of ships in trail, including 4 other carriers.
